Budget Update

The Library presented it’s justification for a flat funded budget (no increased request for funds from the town) at the recent budget hearings, while the town manager proposed a 5% cut in our request. After debate, the town manager’s budget recommendation was approved. The next step is the referendum vote in June. If the budget for the Library is approved, we face the question of where we will make the reductions.

One of the more disappointing opinions expressed during the debate by some was the suggestion the Library begin charging those who use its services. This, of course, goes against the entire history of the mission of the public library in the United States. In fact, many public libraries have the word free in their name. For me, the most disturbing element underlying such an idea is the breakdown in the sense of what it means to belong to a community. Cuts are one thing, but the unwillingness to support the library at all is another entirely.

The loss of 5% of our operating budget is something that we will need to deal with, and we promise our users we will try and make the cuts as painless as possible. The people of Waldoboro who love their library need to become engaged or cuts far more drastic than 5% may result.

The Board of Trustees is the policy-making unit for the library. Trustees are residents of Waldoboro who represent the thinking of the community regarding the goals for the library. The trustees are advocates for library funding and community support. The Board of Trustees supports the principles which have guided public library service through the years--the principles of equity, open and affordable access, patron privacy, first amendment rights, and easy access to electronic information.
