John Fawcett - Artist for January and February 2026

John was born on December 17, 1939, the only child of Doris and James Fawcett. He grew up in Watertown and Waltham, Massachusetts.
He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University School of Fine Arts in 1961. From 1961 to 1963, he worked as an Art Director at McCann Erickson Advertising Agency in New York City. He held a faculty position at the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Fine Arts from 1964 to 1996, progressing from Assistant Professor to Tenured Associate Professor to Professor. During his time at UConn, he taught undergraduate courses in Basic Design, Color, and Graphic Design.
John retired from UConn in 1996 and relocated to Waldoboro, Maine, where he founded Fawcett’s Art, Antiques, and Toy Museum (https://maineantiquetoymuseum.com/).
John’s original art includes pen and ink drawings, acrylic paintings, wooden sculptures, collages, and pen and ink drawings with collage images and rubber stamps, all focused on mostly past and now some present popular culture.
John’s art is in permanent collections in the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York City, as well at several universities, including Yale University and in private collections, including that of his good friend, Mel Birnkrant (see https://melbirnkrant.com/collection/page59.html for a detailed narrative about John’s art and his progression as an artist, with photos of John’s art works in Mel’s collection).
John was represented for many  years by Ivan Karp’s OK Harris Works of Art Gallery in New York City, where he had several shows of his art. The gallery closed in 2014, two years after Ivan Karp’s death.

The collages are for sale and John is generously donating all proceeds to the library. Thank you, John!
