This biography/autobiography tells the stories of three generations of Chinese women. Chang's grandmother had bound feet and was a concubine. Chang's mother was a member of Mao's commmunist party. Chang witnessed the Cultural Revolution and later made her way to a university in England where she currently lives.
May 17, 2023- The Water Dancer by Ta’Nehisi Coates
Beautifully written, this historical novel follows the life of Hiram Walker, born into slavery, who eventually finds a place in the Underground Railroad. Hiram’s “gift” introduces magical realism into this complex engaging novel.
June 21, 2023- A Certain Slant of Light by Cynthia Thayer
Set in the woods of Maine, this novel (by a Maine author) tells the story of an unlikely meeting between two lonely people that leads to friendship and healing.
July 19, 2023- Waking the Spirit: A Musician's Journey Healing Body, Mind, and Soul by Andrew Shulman After a near death experience, the author (a talented musician) uses music to heal himself and others. In this nonfiction book he interweaves his personal experiences, current research, and interviews with neuroscientists and psychiatrists to try to understand how music has the power to heal.

Set in Maine, this award-winning novel by a Maine author revolves around the friendship between a 104-year-old woman and a special young boy scout. It’s a novel of love, loss, and friendship.
