Library Assistant Position
Wage: $17.35 per hour
Schedule: Average of 20 hours/week (Alternating weeks of 18 and 22.5 hours each.) Mondays and Thursdays from 2:00-7:00; Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00-5:00; alternating Saturdays from 8:30 -1:00.
Description: Function of Position:
This position divides responsibilities between work at the circulation desk, around the library, and in the office. This means learning library procedures, including circulation and technical duties. Strong computer skills are required. Public services is a major portion of the position. The employee must be able to comply with library policies on patron confidentiality, public access to computers, and the code of service. Additional duties will include handling overdues and interlibrary loan requests, and ordering, processing and cataloging new library materials. Technology skills such as Internet searching, word processing, email, entering database records, and basic computer troubleshooting will be necessary in this position. Prior library experience is preferred.
Job Requirements:

4. Demonstrate neat work habits, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Job Duties:
1. Handle coverage of the circulation desk: Check materials in/out, register new patrons, help patrons locate materials and information, find answers to reference questions, provide reader's advisory, shelve books, help patrons with photocopier and computers.
2. Handle interlibrary loan requests: place the requests with lending libraries, process and de-process the borrowed books, package and return borrowed books, keep records of the transactions.
3. Help supervise volunteers.
4. Occasionally serve as senior staff in charge of building (when working with a volunteer).
5. Shelve library materials and shelf-read.
6. Help with acquisitions including ordering, processing, and cataloging new materials. Help with withdrawing weeded materials.
7. Process, rotate and withdraw periodical materials 9. Help with maintaining forms on hand, making up new ones when necessary.
8. Assist in seeing that library rules of conduct are observed by asking library users to observe rules of conduct that are not being followed, and by informing the director when necessary.
9. Attend staff meetings. Attends workshops, meetings and conferences as appropriate.
10. Perform other library duties as needed.
11. This position reports to the Library Director.
Qualifications:
1. A degree in Library Science is desired or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities preferred.
2. An associate's degree is required, a bachelor's is preferred.
3. Computer proficiency is required.
4. Attention to detail and an aptitude for learning library skills.
5. Professional, friendly manner and appearance.
6. Must be able to carry books, reach overhead shelves, and lift boxes of materials.
